By My Standards ran second in his first two starts, both as a 2-year-old, before finishing third on Jan. 19 at Fair Grounds in his first start as a 3-year-old. He then earned his first career victory on Feb. 16 at Fair Grounds, where he finished powerfully to win by 4 ¼ lengths under Gabriel Saez.

Trainer Bret Calhoun said he trained exceptionally well after his maiden win and thus took a shot with him in the $1 million Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby. The bay colt surged through an opening on the inside in the stretch and then outfinished runner-up Spinoff in the final 50 yards to win the Grade 2 race by three-quarters of a length and punch his ticket to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve with a 22-1 upset.

Following an extended nine-month layoff, By My Standards returned in February 2020 and won an allowance race at Fair Grounds by six lengths. He followed with another dominant win, taking the Grade 2 New Orleans Classic Stakes by three lengths March 21 at the New Orleans track. He followed with a visually impressive victory from just off the pace in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap May 2 at Oaklawn. He followed with a runner-up finish to Tom’s d’Etat in the Grade 2 Stephen Foster Stakes June 27 at Churchill Downs and then ran second again Aug. 1 in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga.
By My Standards returned to the winner's circle on Sept. 4 on the Longines Kentucky Oaks undercard when he shook clear in the stretch to win the Alysheba S. presented by Sentient Jet Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes Presented by Sentient Jet.
By My Standards made his 2021 debut in the Oaklawn Mile at Oaklawn Park on Apr. 10. In a dramatic stretch run, he won by a nose over Rushine, picking up his fifth stakes win in the process. Next out, he finished second in the Grade 1 Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park on June 5.
By My Standards is from the first crop of two-time Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Goldencents. Grade 2-placed multiple stakes winner A Jealous Woman, by Muqtarib, is the dam (mother) of By My Standards.
