Henley’s Joy opened his career with back-to-back victories. He won a maiden special weight race at Ellis Park by 1 ½ length before prevailing by a head in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes. The Kitten’s Joy colt finished second by a nose in the Dixiana Bourbon Stakes in October at Keeneland before running 13th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Henley’s Joy closed his 2-year-old season with a 4 ½-length win in the Pulpit Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Henley’s Joy began his 3-year-old season with a second-place finish in the Kitten’s Joy Stakes at Gulfstream before testing the waters on the Triple Crown trail and running a well-beaten 10th in the Risen Star Stakes presented by Lamarque Ford.
Returning to the grass, Henley’s Joy rallied for second in the Kentucky Utilities Transylvania Stakes in April at Keeneland, which preceded back-to-back unplaced finishes in graded stakes. Henley’s Joy regained his top form at a perfect time, however, as he closed with a powerful rush to win the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes on July 6.
