Country House finished a disappointing ninth of 11 in his career debut while racing on the turf. He showed marked improvement in his first try on the main track, finishing second in a one-mile race at Aqueduct in December 2018.
The chestnut Lookin At Lucky colt made a sparking 3-year-old debut on Jan. 17 at Gulfstream Park, where he closed from sixth to seize command and then powered clear to a 3 ½-length victory.

The chestnut Lookin At Lucky colt made a sparking 3-year-old debut on Jan. 17 at Gulfstream Park, where he closed from sixth to seize command and then powered clear to a 3 ½-length victory.
That performance gave Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott the confidence to test Country House against stakes competition and he more than held his own in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford. Country House rallied to finish second of 14, beaten only by Lecomte Stakes victor War of Will, in the 1 1/16-mile prep race for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. The runner-up finish earned him 20 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. Country House followed with a fourth-place finish in the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby on March 23. In his final prep for the Kentucky Derby, Country House shipped to Hot Springs, Ark. for the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and rallied to finish third.
Country House was sent off at odds of 65-1 in a sloppy edition of the Kentucky Derby and rallied strongly in the stretch to cross the wire in second behind Maximum Security. However, after a stewards' review of an incident in which Maximum Security veered outward coming out of the turn for home, that horse was disqualified and Country House was named the winner of the 145th Kentucky Derby.
