Caledonia Road scored a 17.30-1 upset in the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar for her first stakes win, and second in three career starts.
The Florida-bred Quality Road filly, trained by Ralph Nickes for Zoom and Fish Stable, Charlie Spiring and Newtown Anner Stud, won her debut at Saratoga Race Course in a seven-furlong maiden race on Sept. 3 and then finished second behind Separationofpowers in the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont, a one-turn mile race.

Stretched out to 1 1/16 miles at Del Mar, Caledonia Road settled in the rear guard before moving up through the turn, taking command in midstretch under Mike Smith, and pulling away to a 3 ¼-length win. That victory lifted Caledonia Road to the 2017 Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old filly.
