Bowies Hero established himself as a consistent turf performer in California during 2016 and 2017, winning his first stakes as a 2-year-old at Del Mar in September 2016. He picked up two more stakes wins during spring and summer 2017 and ran well in several other races, and on Dec. 26 the Artie Schiller colt trained by Phil D’Amato scored his first graded stakes win in the Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile at Santa Anita Park.
Bowies Hero established himself as a consistent turf performer in California during 2016 and 2017, winning his first stakes as a 2-year-old at Del Mar in September 2016. He picked up two more stakes wins during spring and summer 2017 and ran well in several other races, and on Dec. 26 the Artie Schiller colt trained by Phil D’Amato scored his first graded stakes win in the Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile at Santa Anita Park.
Bowies Hero ran second in his 2018 debut in the Grade 3 Thunder Road Stakes before winning the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Miles Stakes on March 10 over a field that included 2017 champion turf male World Approval.
After his Kilroe win, Bowies Hero competed in five consecutive graded stakes without a victory, but showed he was rounding back into form with a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes on May 27, 2019.
Bowies Hero next appeared in the Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar on July 21, and rallied strongly through the stretch under Flavien Prat to score by 2 1/4 lengths, his third career graded stakes win. He finished fifth after steadying late in the Del Mar Mile in August but rebounded with a win in the $1 million, Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile to earn a place in the TVG Breeders' Cup Mile.
