GSP Racing Stable's Well Spelled ambushed Trinniberg in the final strides of the $300,000 Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx Racing Sept. 22, closing from dead last to claim the victory by half a length over the top sprinter.

The sophomore son of Spellbinder went the six furlongs in 1:09.88 under Pablo Fragoso to earn the second stakes score of his career. He won the Jersey Shore Stakes (gr. III) for trainer Ben Perkins Jr. at Monmouth Park July 14.

The six-furlong sprint set up nicely for Well Spelled, who trailed seven other runners by about seven lengths while IL Villano set quick early fractions of :21.41 and :43.95. The leader was pressured by Private Zone and Trinniberg, the latter sent off as the 2-1 second choice. Currency Swap, the 8-5 bettors' choice, raced fourth early but faded to seventh in the field of eight.

Coming down off the turn, it was Trinniberg who had taken the lead past the eighth pole. But Well Spelled was closing ground while swinging remarkably wide into the center of the track, looping the field before straightening away to commence his furious rally. He overpowered Trinniberg inside the sixteenth pole and prevailed strongly to the finish. Private Zone was third.

Well Spelled paid $31.80, $12, and $6.80 while Trinniberg returned $3.80 and $3.40 and Private Zone paid $11.20. IL Villano, Laurie's Rocket, Raging Daoust, Currency Swap, and Jake N Elwood completed the order of finish. Adirondack King scratched.

Bred in Kentucky by Joanne R Mummert out of the Well Decorated mare Well, Well Spelled increased his record to 4-3-3 from 11 wins, with earnings of $347,260. The gray or roan colt was a $50,000 purchase by Perkins at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale when consigned by Rod McVey, agent. McVey purchased the colt for $15,000 from Susan M. Forrester, agent, at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale.
