The Risen Star Stakes is the second leg of Fair Grounds’s Kentucky Derby (G1) prep series, which includes the Lecomte Stakes (G3) and the Louisiana Derby (G2). The race is for 3-year-olds and is run at a distance of 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs). Previously known as the Louisiana Derby Trial Stakes, in 1989 it was renamed to honor locally owned Risen Star, who won the race in 1988 and went on to finish third in the Kentucky Derby, win the Preakness Stakes (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) and be voted the 1988 Champion 3-year-old male. Risen Star’s victories in the Preakness and Belmont were capped off by his owner, Ronnie Lamarque, singing “When the Saints Go Marching In” in the winner’s circle.
