The Rebel Stakes, a race for 3-year-olds run at a distance of 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs) on the Oaklawn Park dirt main track, is the second leg of the Oaklawn’s 3-year-old stakes program, the first being the Southwest Stakes (G3) and the third the Arkansas Derby (G1). In 2004, the Rebel was won by the popular Smarty Jones, who then went on to win the Arkansas Derby, Kentucky Derby (G1), Preakness Stakes (G1), and finish second in the Belmont Stakes (G1) in his Triple Crown bid. Smarty Jones, trained by John Servis, was named the 2004 champion 3-year-old male.
