The Kentucky Oaks is the sister race to the Kentucky Derby and is run the day before the Derby, the first Friday in May. The race is run at 1 1/8 miles for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs with all entries carrying 121 pounds. The winner of the race receives a large garland of lilies, nicknamed the "Lilies for the Fillies". The race was founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. and was first run on May 19, 1875.
The marquee event on the calendar for 3-year-old fillies and has produced countless champions through the years including recent stars Blind Luck, Rachel Alexandra, Proud Spell, and Rags to Riches.
