Held annually on the first Saturday in May, the Kentucky Derby (G1) is the nation’s premier race for 3-year-olds. It is contested at 1 ¼ miles (10 furlongs) on the dirt main track at Churchill. First held in 1875, the Kentucky Derby is affectionately called the “Run for the Roses” and represents the first leg of the U.S. Triple Crown.
