Named for the mythical Florida spring that granted eternal youth and sought by Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon, the Fountain of Youth Stakes, a race for 3-year-olds run at 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs) on Gulfstream Park’s dirt course, is the final local stakes prep for the Florida Derby (G1). In 1995, Thunder Gulch, who was victorious in this race and the Florida Derby, went on win the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes and be named the 1995 champion 3-year-old male.
