Named for the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, characterized by grass having bluish-green culms, the Blue Grass Stakes is competed for by 3-year-olds at a distance of 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs) on the synthetic Polytrack surface at Keeneland Race Course. Strike the Gold in 1991 was the last horse to win the Blue Grass Stakes and the Kentucky Derby (G1). Hall of Fame jockey Bill Shoemaker won the Blue Grass six times.
