To learn more about what workouts mean, click here.

While workouts aren’t everything, they do tell us how the horses are coming into their respective races. A bad workout could indicate trouble for the horse or just show that the trainer wanted to stretch their legs a little bit. I don’t recommend throwing a horse out just because it worked the 26th fastest at the distance but if you are worried, it is worth it to look up what those that saw the work are saying. There are many different opinions on all the works that happened this weekend, especially when it comes to notable horses so find someone you trust to give you the information you are looking for. Remember, it may be a big race weekend, but many trainers approach the Breeders’ Cup just like they do with any other race when it comes to training their horses.

It’s also worth noting that all the Europeans other than trainer Aidan O’Brien’s are at Santa Anita. O’Brien’s horses are scheduled to fly to California on Tuesday, including Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Declaration of War.

In Non-Breeders’ Cup News

  • Rosie Napravnik again made racing history on Saturday when she closed out Keeneland’s Fall meet as the meet’s leading jockey. She won 17 races to become the first woman to win the title. Also joining her on the leader board was the meet’s leading owners, Ken and Sarah Ramsey, who also won 17 races to break their own record for Fall meet wins by an owner. Overall, the meet was full of record breakers as the meet also broke Keeneland attendance and handle records.
  • Woodbine held two spectacular races on Sunday with the $500,000 E.P. Taylor Stakes and the $1 million Canadian International. Tannery, who was last during the beginning stages of the E.P. Taylor made it an exciting race when she won a close race over Fitful Skies. Tannery lost a close Flower Bowl  Invitational to stablemate Laughing (who is headed to the Breeders’ Cup) in her last start so it was nice to see the tables turn for her today.
  • Joshua Tree earned his third Canadian International in the second to last race of the day at Woodbine. The 6-year-old loves Woodbine, winning three of his four races at the track and finishing second in the only Canadian International he hasn’t won. He’s the only three time winner of the race, winning the race with three different jockeys and trainers, winning this edition for trainer Ed Dunlop and jockey Ryan Moore.
