The $350,000 Princess Rooney Handicap features Judy the Beauty, who is going for her first graded stakes victory in 10 starts.

With a full 12 horse field expected, the Princess Rooney becomes an interesting puzzle to decipher as many of the others have run well in stakes races. Perhaps foremost among those is Judy the Beauty, most recently second in the Grade 2 Winning Colors Stakes and also the runner-up last summer in the Grade 1 Prioress Stakes. Starship Truffles enters the race off a ten length win as well as won the Musical Romance Stakes in April at Calder so is another with every right to succeed. Recent U Can Do It Handicap winner Capitalism at Risk and runner-up Oh Carole also could make their presence felt, while Spectacular Sky has potential to return to the form shown three races back when winning the Manatee Stakes. Sweet Cassiopeia won the West Virginia Secretary of State Stakes last summer at the distance of the Princess Rooney and enters the race off a runner-up effort so could be a contender. Holiday Soiree, who comes into the race off a pair of third place finishes in stakes including the Grade 1 Humana Distaff and My Pal Chrissy, with previous stakes winning form, are two more who could have a say in the outcome. French Politics and Centrique finished first and second, respectively, in a fast race at Calder last month which suggests they may fit at this level. Givhans Ferry and also-eligible Costly (who can run only if another horse withdraws) round out the field.

Judy the Beauty has earned 100 or better Equibase Speed Figures in her last four races, three of those efforts coming in stakes. Never worse than second in nine career starts, Judy the Beauty returned from seven months off in April to win a non-stakes race before a fine runner-up effort at the end of May in the Winning Colors Stakes at Churchill Downs. Having earned back-to-back 106 figures when second in the Prioress Stakes and Gallant Bloom Stakes last summer and with a very sharp five-eighths of a mile workout before leaving her home base in Kentucky, Judy the Beauty appears on the verge of winning for the fifth time in her career and garnering her first graded stakes win.

Reneesgotzip, like Judy the Beauty, enters the race off a runner-up effort in a graded stakes missing by a neck after leading late in the La Brea Stakes last December at Santa Anita. Unlike Judy the Beauty, Reneesgotzip has won a graded stakes in her career, doing so when victorious in the Santa Ynez Stakes in only the second start of her career in January 2012. Rested for more than six months since the La Brea, Reneesgotzip put in a strong five-eighths of a mile workout before leaving her home base in California for the trip to Florida. Having earned a career best 111 when coming back from a layoff last September in the CERF Stakes, Reneesgotzip has every right to be in the photo on the wire in the Princess Rooney.

Sweet Cassiopeia has had all of her recent success on the grass but previously proved capable at this level on dirt. Her best recent effort came when victorious in the Giant’s Causeway Stakes in April at Keeneland with a career best 110 figure. Proven versatile on dirt when taking the West Virginia Secretary of State Stakes last August, at the distance of the Princess Rooney, Sweet Cassiopeia is another strong contender for all the marbles in this race.

Starship Truffles LOVES to win races, now with 13 victories in 23 starts including 10 at Calder in 15 tries. Entering the Princess Rooney off a 10 length victory over the track that earned a 103, Starship Truffles may be approaching the form that saw her win the Claiming Crown Glass Slipper Stakes last December with a 104 figure, or the 107 figure effort put forth two races after that, either perhaps good for the slight upset win in this race if repeated.

The rest of the Princess Rooney Handicap field, with their best representative Equibase Speed Figures, is Capitalism at Risk (99), Centrique (103), Costly (93) French Politics (106), Givhans Ferry (93) and Holiday Soiree (102), My Pal Chrissy (96), Oh Carole (105) and Spectacular Sky (108).
