Book Review aced her latest test on Saturday when she won the A Gleam Handicap at Hollywood Park for her first win of 2013.
The Giant’s Causeway daughter had finished second in both her starts this year, losing by a combined 2 ¼ lengths in two Grade 2 events but Saturday was her day as she easily won the A Gleam. The win was even more special for her connections as it was a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” event, guaranteeing Book Review a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.
Book Review went off at odds of 3.10-1 as the third choice and sat back in fourth for jockey Rafael Bejarano right out of the gate. Teddy’s Promise and Winding Way battled it out a few lengths in front of the field and Book Review took the third position around the turn as the two continued to battle it out up front. But when the time came to run, the leaders were no match for the filly as she blew past them to take the lead in the final furlong.
Book Review won by 2 1/4 lengths, running the 7 furlongs in a time of 1:22.75 with Teddy’s Promise edging out Byrama for third. The A Gleam is her sixth career victory and second with trainer Bob Baffert. Book Review runs for owner-breeders Gary and Mary West.
