By Ellis Starr – National Racing Analyst for Equibase

Blueskiesnrainbows finished fourth to Liaison last month in the Mervyn Leroy Handicap after leading from the start but gets a KEY jockey change back to the meet’s leading jockey in Rafael Bejarano, who rode the colt to a strong 3 ¾-length win prior to that. Blueskiesnrainbows won the Swaps Stakes last summer at Betfair Hollywood Park (tying a career-best with a 106 Equibase Speed Figure) so is proven at the distance in top company and as it appears likely he will be able to put away the only other horse in the field with a desire to lead early, Batti Man. Blueskiesnrainbows has every right to turn the tables on Liaison and win the Californian in wire-to-wire fashion.

Liaison has run the two best races of his career since returning in March from a six-month layoff, first winning the Santana Mile Stakes with a 106 Equibase Speed Figure then improving to a 112 figure when victorious in the Mervyn Leroy Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park, beating Kettle Corn and Blueskiesnrainbows in the process. With Martin Garcia in the saddle for the Californian, the same as for his last two victories, Liaison could be very tough to beat once again.

Clubhouse Ride and Kettle Corn deserve honorable mention and both can be considered for exactas and similar exotic wagers made involving this race. Clubhouse Ride has finished second in five straight races including four graded stakes, the last three to Game On Dude. With no horse of that caliber (as of yet) in this field, Clubhouse Ride does have a chance to succeed, but it must be noted that he has eight career runner-up efforts and just three victories. He also is winless in six tries at Hollywood Park (with one runner-up finish and three third-place finishes), so I feel is if a second-place effort is the best he can do once again. Kettle Corn finished second in last year’s running of this race to Game On Dude and was most recently second to Liaison with no excuse. He is a tough competitor but there is nothing to suggest he can turn the tables on Liaison in the Californian, so second may be the best he’s capable of as well.
