We’re all familiar with the cycle of a trend: It pops up one season, and then four or so years later, it’s back again. Maybe even longer. Take neons, for instance. They were once a thing of the past, long to reign in the archives of “Saved by the Bell”.   Then POOF! They show up in Bloomingdales in the form of a maxi skirt.

The great thing about horse racing is that it always calls for more classic pieces than trendy ones. Cropped Navajo-print tees and cut-offs don’t belong in the races. (Coachella is that a-way, hipster). Teacup dresses, oversized sunglasses and vintage clutches do.

Kate Spade New York is one of those designers who teeter between trendy and classic. While they will put out some real statement pieces that scream “I’m very on-trend right now. Look at me in the pages of Elle” other looks from Kate are tried-and-true classics, especially for occasions such as these.

Bows, bright scarves and hats: What more could you ask for when preparing for the Derby?

Let’s start with their straw hats. These little beauties are good for those of us not yet brave enough to don a massive, wide-brimmed hat or jazzy fascinator. The designs are bright enough to make a gal feel festive, but not enough to make her feel like she needs a few Mint Juleps to pull it off.

Kate Spade’s striped hats in navy/clotted cream and bazooka/clotted cream (I can’t believe these names) would match perfectly with a sun dress (I’m thinking eyelit or cotton). The darling bow is the cherry on top of the – wait for it – clotted cream.

I also fancy the color-block sun hat.  A bit less feminine than its striped counterpart, but also does the trick in achieving the same effect.

If you subscribe to the mindset that a scarf makes an outfit, then may I suggest Kate Spade’s In Full Bloom jumbo blossom number? It’s reminiscent of Ralph Lauren’s equestrian scarf in that the colors just seem to POP off its owner. Tie it around the neck or to a purse, and you’ll stand out from a sea full of hats.

This reversible printed belt is THE perfect accessory for Derby day. It’s spring time, everyone’s hopped up on the promise of a winning horse and big payout. Life is good, and this reversible belt (to cinch a darling white dress) is the perfect accessory for a right celebration.

This bit of jewelry may be my most favorite accessory for spring. Behold, Kate Spade’s Field Day statement necklace. Look at that thing!

Statement necklace indeed. Every fella in the stands will want to talk to you about that giant piece of gorgeousness around your neck. I can hear it now: “Hey, do you have to grow that thing yourself? Har har har.”

Well, I didn’t say that the fellas would be winners …
