Many Americans equate horse racing with spring time and/or warm weather. For the Brits, it’s a year-round thing. Come rain or shine, the hat comes out, the bets are placed and loads of shouting commences (and to think, we pegged them as reserved).
The annual Cheltenham Festival took place in the Southwest England town that boasts the flagship race of British steeplechase horse racing, The Gold Cup (which took place on Friday, March 15th).
The Duke and Duchess watched the main event on the final day of the festival alongside many of their close friends. Her Royal Highness wore a chocolate “Betty Boop” hat by Sylvia Fletcher for Lock & Co with a salmon-colored Joseph coat and Stuart Weitzman boots.
The Duchess carried an Emmy Shoes clutch and wore Kiki McDonough citrine cushion earrings.
A jolly good photo of Prince William getting his ear pulled while watching the races went viral, prompting everyone to ask, “who was that scally wag?”
The arm that tugged the future King’s ear belonged to one of his closest friends, Harry Aubrey-Fletcher, who aimed to distract the Prince from watching “the sport of kings.”
Olympic equestrian Zara Phillips, daughter of the Princess Royal and Queen Elizabeth’s first granddaughter, was present for most of the week. Phillips, who does not have a title (her mother’s choice, as Princess Anne wanted her children to lead a normal life) was accompanied by her husband, Mike Tindall.
Zara wore a gorgeous purple fascinator by Jane Taylor with a structured coat by Irish designer Paul Costelloe on day one, and chose a military look for the festival’s second day.
Tindall, who drunkenly bid over $17,000 on a horse named Monbeg Dude at a dinner auction, watched as his investment lost to Bob’s Worth during the Gold Cup.
Pippa Middleton joined the masses on Thursday, wearing Katherine Hooker's "Tori" mustard coat and a hat we may have seen her mother, Carole Middleton wear at Prince William’s Passing Out ceremony in 2006.
Middleton watched the horse races and hung out with friends, including banker Tom Kingston.
Despite being linked to Nico Jackson, Middleton has been photographed a few times in the past two years with Kingston. In 2011 they watched the Tennis Masters at London's 02 Arena, and Kingston accompanied the famous bridesmaid to LouLous's in November.
"Tom is utterly charming, polite and very popular with the ladies," a source told the Daily Mail's Richard Kay. "In fact, he is just the kind of guy you would want to introduce to your mother."
