Blog - RACING

Racing across the country this summer was extremely successful from coast to coast and in between. Saratoga Race Course, Del Mar, Arlington Park, and Louisiana Downs offered up exceptional racing with great crowds and exciting 2-year-old racing.

I spent the summer weekends at Saratoga covering racing for NBC Sports. The network has made a huge commitment to Thoroughbred horse racing, and I appreciate the chance to showcase some of the best racing of the summer on national television to a whole new group of people who don't often get a chance to watch horse racing, other than the Triple Crown races and the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

These five “Summer at Saratoga” shows gave the sport a chance to preview and get to know some of the stars, equine and human, who will be competing in the upcoming Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita Park on November 2-3, which will be televised by NBC and NBC Sports Network.

With fall racing now upon us Belmont Park has continued on with the great momentum from the Saratoga meeting with a great start. Santa Anita opens in a couple of weeks with several “Win and You’re In” races for the Breeders' Cup and shares the spotlight of Super Saturday with Belmont on September 29.

I am currently back in California preparing for the Breeders' Cup. Going out to Santa Anita the last several mornings has been refreshing after a busy summer of traveling and covering great racing. It has been extremely busy of late as we are preparing to open the doors to the world as guests for our year-end championships.

I look forward to seeing the Europeans' arrivals and watching the remaining prep races and the on-track preps as the horses from overseas and across the United States begin to arrive.

Breeders' Cup is just around the corner, there is an feeling of excitement in the air. I can't wait!!!!!!

Gary Stevens

After a seven-year retirement, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens made the decision to return to the saddle in 2013. The season turned into a perfect Hollywood story when he annexed three of the biggest races of the year by winning the Preakness on Oxbow, the Breeders' Cup Distaff on Beholder, and the Breeders' Cup Classic on Mucho Macho Man in addition to 14 other graded stakes races. Stevens was a finalist for the 2013 Eclipse Award as outstanding jockey. According to Stevens, his return isn't a short-term deal as he will be riding again in 2014.

In addition to regaining his elite form as a jockey, Stevens also is an on-air racing analyst for HRTV and NBC and an accomplished actor who starred in Seabiscuit and the HBO series "Luck".
