ABRV - GAMBLING

The Breeders' Cup Classic rematch between Mucho Macho Man (inside) and Will Take Charge (outside) is the central storyline for the 2014 Santa Anita Handicap, which will be televised on FOX Sports 1 at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday at Santa Anita Park. (Photo by Eclipse Sportswire)

I can’t remember the last time we had this amount of buzz going into the Santa Anita Handicap. Not only do we have the first two finishers of the Breeders Cup Classic (Mucho Macho Man and Will Take Charge), the horse who went off as the favorite (Game On Dude) is also in the mix for this year’s running of the Big ’Cap.

Mucho Macho Man is here to show them who is the champ; Will Take Charge is trying to turn the tables; and Game On Dude is looking for redemption.

Although a field of eight will head to the gate, these three runners will get all the attention and the majority of the play. Let’s take a look at the tale of the tape for this trio of superstars.

Last Race

Style of Running

Mucho Macho Man

$5,580,410

3-2-1-0

4-1-1-1

Won easily, like he was expected to do, against easier company.

Likes to be within striking range of the lead.

Will Take Charge

$3,155,148

1-0-1-0

4-1-1-0

Ran a good second behind runner that set a track record.

Likes to come from mid-pack or from the back to the pack.

Game On Dude

$5,713,893

10-7-0-0

12-5-3-0

Hooked up in blistering speed duel and tired to fifth in field of seven.

Free running horse. Likes to be on the lead. Has won from slightly off the leaders.

Mucho Macho Man’s last race – the Florida Sunshine Millions Classic on Feb. 9 – was more like a paid workout. He was expected to win, and he did so easily. He’s the reigning Breeders’ Cup Classic victor and deserves all the credit coming into this race, but personally I didn’t like his workout the other day.

Game On Dude looks to have landed in a race that favors his style. There does not seem to be any strong speed in this race and he could get away with an easy lead. I think Mucho Macho Man will be sent along to pressure him early in the race, and that sounds like trouble for both of them.

Will Take Charge has plenty of momentum going his way. He’s a newly turned 4-year-old who is only making his second start of 2014 and looks to have plenty of room to improve. Hopefully, this smaller field of eight leads to less traffic trouble for his closing style.

Here’s how I will tackle the race with a $20 investment:

$5 Exacta: 1 with 2,7 (Total $10)

Will Take Charge on top with Mucho Macho Man and Game on Dude for second. The obvious three choices.

$1 Trifecta: 2,3,4,5,7,8 with 1 with 2,7 (Total $10)

This Trifecta play will key Will Take Charge for second, Mucho Macho Man and Game On Dude for third, and use some longshots on top. This scenario could workout if Game On Dude and Mucho Macho Man duel on the lead and wear each other out while one of the bigger prices gets an early jump on Will Take Charge for the win.

Mucho Macho Man

$5,580,410

3-2-1-0

4-1-1-1

Will Take Charge

$3,155,148

1-0-1-0

4-1-1-0

Game On Dude

$5,713,893

10-7-0-0

12-5-3-0

Will Take Charge como cabeza con Mucho Macho Man y Game on Dude para segundo. Los obvios tres de la carrera.

$1 Trifecta: 2,3,4,5,7,8 con 1 con 2,7 (Total $10)

Esta trifecta escogerá a Will Take Charge para segundo, Mucho Macho Man y Game On Dude para tercero, y usaré algunos lances arriba. Este escenario podría trabajar, si Game On Dude y Mucho Macho Man se matan en la punta y se anulan entre ambos mientras uno de los grandes precios consigue madrugar a Will Take Charge por la victoria.
