Ten Essential Bottles of Booze for a Home Bar

The Life

A well stocked at-home bar is wonderful for entertaining at home.

Sure, a fully stocked bar looks nice, but it's not too practical. You probably are limited by space or budget or both, but there’s no reason to skimp on the variety you offer your guests.

Unless there’s an overwhelming favorite, don’t worry about having the exact liquor that everyone you know enjoys. There’s something on this list for everyone. Whether you’re sitting around with friends, impressing a date, laughing with family or just relaxing by yourself, here are the 10 must-haves to make your home bar the best there is!

1. Champagne — Life is worth celebrating, and popping a bottle of bubbly is always a fun way to celebrate the big and small accomplishments in life, or just because!

2. Red wine — Pinot Noir is my favorite red and absolute favorite wine. While it’s typically difficult to find a value-priced Pinot Noir, two of my “special occasion” favorites ($44-$55 a bottle) are the 2009 Sequana Pinot Noir from Sarmento Vineyard and 2009 Elk Cove Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley, Ore. Food & Wine put out a fantastic Best $15-and-Under Red Wines list the 2009 Di Majo Norante Sangiovese Terre degli Osci ($11 a bottle) they suggest sounds like something I’m going to have to try — you should, too!

3. White wine —  The 2010 Fontana Candida Frascati from Lazio Italy is super refreshing, light and crisp. When I was working at a wine school back in college, one of my colleagues told us that during the annual harvest festival it’s piped through the plumbing system and it flows out of the town center’s fountain -- free vino for everyone! If you’re a Riesling fan, purchase a bottle of the 2010 Willow Crest Riesling from Yakima Valley in Washington for you and your guests.

4. Sambuca (served with three coffee beans, of course) — The smell of this star anise-, liquorice- and spice-infused liquor is one of my favorite ways to cap off a delicious meal! Used as a digestive aid by the Italians, sambuca can also be added to coffee in place of sugar. “Con la mosca” — the iconic three beans I mentioned earlier, are said to represent health, happiness and prosperity.

5. Beer — There are so many different types of beer out there and it’s hard to please everyone with just one type. Some guests will like IPAs, while others might prefer stouts or ciders (there are so many beer options). Luckily, most stores now allow you to create your own sampler packs, enabling you to get a fun variety of local breweries, imports and the good ole domestics that are sure to make everyone happy. Get at least two of each in case someone finds one they like and wants to stick to it for a few drinks.

6. Bourbon — Mint Juleps (hello cocktail of the Kentucky Derby), Old Fashioned, Manhattan – three of the more popular ways to drink it. Maker’s Mark, the signature red wax dipped seal bottle, is a great choice for your home bar.

A cool tidbit? In 1997, Maker’s Mark began creating special-edition Keeneland series and horse bottles in addition to a limited number of Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed bottles.

7. Tequila — While this will probably be one of your least-used bottles, I especially like to drink a Margarita on the rocks when I’m cooking Mexican food, and therefore I think it’s a must-have for your home bar. Margs aren’t the only tasty adult beverage that includes tequila; you can also easily whip up palomas, sangritas and tequila sours. Be sure to go with the 100-percent agave tequila instead of the “fifty-one percenters,” the latter are full of coloring, sugars and other hangover helpers and should be avoided. El Jimador Blanco is a good mixing tequila and should only be between $15 and $22 a bottle.

8. Vodka — The universal spirit! While it’s pretty tasteless and odorless, there’s a huge range of cocktails to make from it — Bloody Marys, spritzers, martinis, cosmos, screwdrivers, Moscow Mules ... I could go on and on. It’s definitely the most usable, popular, mixable liquor. Ketel One is a perfect option for your home bar — a neutral, subtle premium option.

9. Gin — Gin typically is combined with a variety of ingredients, so don't worry about buying the most expensive bottle. Just make sure the bottle you pick doesn't have an artificial juniper flavor. My favorite gin is Tanqueray and not because it’s been mentioned in it’s fair share of pop culture songs from The Notorious B.I.G to Madonna and Bruce Springsteen. “Name a lyric where this liquor is mentioned” could turn out to be a fun drinking game.

10. Last but not least, Rum — Mount Gay Eclipse Silver is a good addition to any home bar. You never know when someone will be the mood for a Dark and Stormy, a daiquiri, a mojito or perhaps even a hurricane. I’m getting tropical vibes from this one.

Cheers!
