Out of the Gate with ... Jim WIlson

Jim Wilson is a horse racing fan as well as a producer and director best known for Dances with Wolves and Mr. Brooks. His newest film, due out on March 21 of this year, is 50 to 1, the story of Mine That Bird and his connections who stunned the nation with their longshot victory in the 2009 Kentucky Derby. The film stars Skeet Ulrich as trainer Chip Woolley as well as Christian Kane and William Devane as the co-owners of Mine That Bird. Watch the trailer here.

What I do for a living: Produce/direct films

How and when I was introduced to Thoroughbred racing: My parents took me to Santa Anita in 1960. I’ve been keen on the sport ever since. Purchased my first racehorse in 1991.

My favorite racetrack: Santa Anita, you can’t beat the weather or the setting.

My favorite Thoroughbred racing event: Kentucky Derby and all its glory

Other sports/teams I follow: Tennis, Lakers, Dodgers, Kings

What I would like to see more of in Thoroughbred racing: Marketing

What I would like to see less of in Thoroughbred racing: Short fields

Three words that define what Thoroughbred racing means to me: Horse, jockey, speed

First Thoroughbred track I ever attended was: Santa Anita

Favorite all-time Thoroughbred: Zenyatta. I was fortunate to see quite a few of her races live.

My personal best moment in the sport of Thoroughbred racing: Being with my mother when a horse I named after her won. Priceless.

Best racetrack food can be found at: I am partial to the corned-beef sandwiches at Santa Anita

My favorite jockey: Laffit Pincay Jr.

My favorite trainer: Bobby Frankel

My heroes: Underdogs

My philosophy on life: Grab it and hold on.

Favorite non-Thoroughbred racing sports event I have attended: Wimbledon. I actually played barefoot after the matches.
