Occupation: Attorney and Global Business Advisor
Qualifying Site: Horsetourneys.com
Favorite Track: Santa Anita
Favorite Wager: Three horse trifecta box
How did you first get into horse racing? At age 12, I visited Thistledown with a family friend. Since I was good at math, I enjoyed reading the Daily Racing Form and picking horses. Later, my younger brother entered the thoroughbred industry as a bug boy at Monmouth. He eventually became an exercise rider, riding for Hall of Fame trainer, Woody Stephens, and then later for Leroy Jolley. He rode Breeders' Cup winners, Gulch and Manilla. I spent a lot of time on the backstretch with him. I was hooked from day 1!
How many times have you previously qualified for the DRF/NTRA NHC? Eight times, including this year.
What is your best finish in a handicapping tournament, and what is your largest tournament payout? I finished fourth at NHC VII and fifth at NHC X and received $30K plus a daily prize for finishing in second on the first day.
What is your most memorable horse racing experience? NHC X at Red Rock. I had been playing well all year and I had a strong first day, finishing in second place. I then took the lead early on day 2 with a cap horse at Gulfstream. I was in the lead most of the day. The final race at Santa Anita was off the turf and a 20-1 horse (No. 10) won the race wire to wire. I, of course, did not pick that horse and ended up fifth for the contest. It was amazing two days of horse racing.
Do you have any hobbies, experiences or past accomplishments that others might find unique or interesting? I am an accomplished craps players and I travel quite a bit. I have visited more than 40 countries.
Does anyone else in your family share your enthusiasm as a horseplayer? I have five children. At one time or another, they were all enthusiastic about the horses. But the one who has continued to share my enthusiasm to date is my 17-year-old son, Benjamin. He has always enjoyed going to the track and he is very good at picking the horses. Soon he will compete in the NHC!
What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of? I am very proud of my five children.
What would you do with the NHC grand prize if you won? Pay for my children to go to college; eliminate debt and contribute a portion of the winnings to charity.
