How did you first get into horse racing? Through my late grandfather Pete Salvino, who used to handicap the horses at Hawthorne [Race Course] in suburban Chicago. Years later, I would take him to spend the day at Hawthorne and then later, Arlington International, where he would teach me the fundamentals of handicapping.

How many times have you previously qualified for the DRF/NTRA NHC? I have been competing in the DRF/NTRA NHC contests since 2010, but this will be the first time I have qualified.

What is your best finish in a handicapping tournament, and what is your largest tournament payout?
Last June, I placed first in a HPWS [Horse Players World Series] qualifying contest, but I chose to accept the cash equivalent [$1,500] instead of attending the event. At the time, I was focused on qualifying for the DRF/NTRA NHC only.

What wager created the largest payout for you? In June 2013, at the HPWS qualifying contest, I hit a Pick 5 at Calder Race Course, which in itself was almost enough to win the contest.

What is your most memorable horse racing experience? On July 13, 1996 at Arlington, with my grandfather and over 34,000 others at my side, I watched in awe as Cigar crushed the field in the Arlington Citation Challenge.

Do you have any interesting hobbies, experiences or past accomplishments that others might find unique or interesting? I am currently trying to finish two different screenplays, hopefully for production one day.

Does anyone else in your family share your enthusiasm as a horseplayer? No, apart from my grandfather (who passed away in 2002), no other family members share my enthusiasm as a horseplayer.

What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of? Obtaining a college degree, incorporating my love for writing in my daily work and, most recently, placing first in the March 22 online DRF/NTRA NHC contest.

What would you do with the NHC grand prize if you won?  Pay off the mortgage, assist any family members who may be in need and MAYBE ... move to Las Vegas permanently.
