Out of the Gate with ... Anna Seitz
Anna Seitz grew up on her parents’ Brookdale Farm in Versailles, Ky. She is a 2003 graduate of the University of Notre Dame and, before joining Fasig-Tipton in 2009, she spent almost four years working for trainer Todd Pletcher. Anna does marketing and client relations for Fasig-Tipton and, in an effort to attract new owners and fans to racing, she and her husband, Evan Ciannello, manage racing partnerships with an emphasis on fun. The star of their Hit the Board Stables is graded stakes winner I’m Already Sexy, a 3-year-old turf filly by Ready’s Image. Anna also started an all-women syndicate – It’s All About the Girls – that includes 40 partners.
Name: Anna Seitz
What I do for a living: I work at Fasig-Tipton in Kentucky
How and when I was introduced to Thoroughbred racing: I was born into it. My Dad started Brookdale Farm in Versailles, KY and both of my brothers work in the industry full time as well. I guess I was destined to be in it!
My favorite racetrack: Arlington
My favorite Thoroughbred racing event: I love Super Saturday at Belmont in the fall.
Other sports/teams I follow: Notre Dame Football
What I would like to see more of in Thoroughbred racing: I would like for the tracks to make it easier and more fun to own horses. I have been in this business my whole life and still have problems when we run horses for our partnerships. It’s intimidating and frustrating. If it were easier to do, more people would want to own their own horses. Make ownership enjoyable and welcoming!
What I would like to see less of in Thoroughbred racing: Negative stories in the media. Oh and less license applications. Can’t I just fill out one and it work in every state??
Three words that define what Thoroughbred racing means to me: Exhilarating, all-consuming, unique (guess that’s four. Sorry)
First Thoroughbred track I ever attended was: Keeneland
Favorite All-time Thoroughbred: I’m Already Sexy (I will always hold a special place in my heart for Rags to Riches!)
My personal best moment in the sport of Thoroughbred racing: Winning the Pucker Up (G3) with I’m Already Sexy, who we bought for only $20,000.
Best racetrack food can be found at: Saratoga
My favorite jockey: Johnny V.
My favorite trainer: Tie between Todd Pletcher and Wayne Catalano
My Heroes: My family
Person in Thoroughbred racing I’d like to have dinner with: I would have loved to have had dinner with Charlie Whittingham. My dad said he was a great guy, but I was too young to really know him.
My philosophy on life: Don’t take life too seriously. Be nice to people and always find the positive in every situation. Those are things I constantly tell myself.
Favorite animal other than a horse: Dogs
Favorite non-Thoroughbred racing sports event I have attended: Front row seat at training camp for the New York Giants.
Favorite food: Spicy Italian sausage
Favorite vacation spot: I’m not good about taking vacations. My husband, Evan, and I usually end up somewhere near a racetrack. We started our honeymoon at Del Mar!
Favorite city: Normandy, France (it’s more of a region I suppose!)
Favorite musician/band: I’m on a Daft Punk kick right now
Favorite all-time movie(s): The Natural
Favorite TV show: I don’t watch much TV but I guess "The Big Bang Theory" (I can relate to the nerds)
Favorite hotel: Griffin Gate Marriott
Websites I visit daily: Blood-Horse, Paulick Report, TDN (does that count?), DRF.com and The Week. (How boring am I?)
What I drive: Nissan Rogue
Pet peeve: I can’t stop chewing my nails. It really annoys me.
Favorite movie about horse racing: Let it Ride.
Which actor would play me in a movie: I’m told I look like Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby. She has bigger muscles than me though.
Alma Mater: University of Notre Dame
Favorite radio shows/channels: I listen to books on tape (I’m a total geek) and whatever is popular on the radio.
Best book I recently read: I love reading. I recently read “The Kitchen House” on a work trip and highly recommend it.
Favorite dessert: Vanilla ice cream and my mom’s homemade chocolate sauce.
Favorite drink: My husband’s lattes with ground cinnamon on top.
Favorite scent: Fresh mint from our garden.
What I like about my job: I travel a lot, meet a lot of incredible people and spend a lot of time at the racetrack.
