DAILY RACING FORM / NTRA PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
Name: Chris Fallica
Resides: Farmington, Conn.
Occupation: Senior Researcher, ESPN College GameDay, Golf
Favorite Track: Saratoga and Del Mar
Favorite Wager: Pick 4 and Pick 5
How did you get into horse racing? My dad was a racing fan. Growing up on Long Island made it easy to get hooked on racing. We often went to the races at Suffolk Meadows when I was young. Attending college in Miami, I would spend a good bit of time at Calder, Gulfstream and Hialeah.
How many times have you previously qualified for the DRF/NTRA NHC? One other time, 2012.
What wager created the largest payout for you? I hit the Pick 6 at Del Mar Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012 for $91,156. I wasn't even planning on playing that Sunday because I was angry over getting beat out of the Arlington Pick 5 the previous day by Little Mike after being six deep in the race. But I saw there was a carryover Sunday morning. I refocused, put some money in my account, and the rest is history. I Run For Fun will go down as may favorite horse of all time - with Colledimezzo a close second. I also shared the post-Derby Day Churchill Downs Pick 6, May 12, 2011, splitting $144,000 with three others.
What is your most memorable horse racing experience? Two stand out. Being alive to the last race on a $96 ticket in May 19, 2004 Hollywood Park Pick 6. I believe the pool had about $3.5 million in it. In the last leg, I didn't use the heavily favored entry and used two other horses, one of which was Aaronasher. Him winning would have resulted in a pool payout for me. He broke slow from the rail, made a huge middle move to bid for the lead and faded. He won his next start at 20-to-1. Probably my best handicapping job ever resulted in the worst five or six ever.
Second was when we picked the Breeders' Cup Classic on College GameDay and Kirk Herbstreit asks me for the pick. I tell him "it's a cold exacta, Invasor over Bernandini." So he gives that out on the air, and obviously that's how the race wound up. During the college football game that night one of the studio cut-ins had the Classic highlight and result in it, so Kirk and Brent Musburger take it back from the studio and Brent comments to Kirk about his pick that morning, asking how he came up with that exacta. Kirk responds with something along the lines of "I had a little help from someone named Chris Fallica," to which Brent replies "ah yes, a very good handicapper" (or something to that extent). Pretty cool stuff.
Do you have any interesting hobbies, experiences or past accomplishments that others might find unique or interesting? Worked on College GameDay TV show since 1996. It has been a pretty incredible experience.
Does anyone else in your family share your enthusiasm as a horseplayer? My dad always enjoyed the horses and is the reason I became a fan of and involved in the sport.
What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of? Having a great family, great friends and a job I love.
What would you do with the NHC grand prize if you won? Take a nice vacation and buy a new home.
