Voices From The Grandstand

  • Hall of Fame Jockey Gary Stevens, who will ride Preakness winner Oxbow in the Belmont Stakes on June 8:

Belmont is like the ocean, you can have a lot of fun in it but it can also hurt you if you don't respect it.

  • Gary Stevens, who came out of retirement earlier this year after a seven year hiatus, talks to the Louisville Courier-Journal about leaving Churchill Downs to ride in California:

Certain things just didn’t work out right. There are no grudges whatsoever. I just take the salt and rub it in the wounds and move on.

  • Trainer Dallas Stewart, trainer of Golden Soul who ran second to Orb in the Kentucky Derby describing the challenge of the Belmont Stakes in the Blood-Horse:

The Belmont is a test of endurance, and the longest and strongest will survive.

  • Trainer Tom Proctor after Marketing Mix won the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park this past Monday in the Thoroughbred Daily News:

She’s a good mare. She makes me look good, that’s how good she is.
