Voices From The Grandstand

  • Trainer Jeff Greenhill on a national media teleconference discussing what it’s like to suddenly be the focus of attention as Spiral Stakes contender Mac the Man prepares to run this Saturday at Turfway Park:

Well, I kind of liked it under the radar, but if you're going to excel in this business, I guess you're eventually going to have to find some spotlight. When I saw some of the people included in this teleconference, it kind of occurred to me that if this teleconference were a gourmet meal, I'd be the parsley.

  • Horse owner and NFL Hall of Famer Paul Hornung on what it would mean to win the Kentucky Derby in his hometown of Louisville with Titletown Five:

This would be the greatest day of my life if I had the opportunity to walk out in that winner’s circle and thank the people of my hometown. Just imagine, a hometown boy winning the Kentucky Derby.

  • Trainer Larry Jones on Rosie Napravnik after her winning ride aboard Joyful Victory in last Saturday's Santa Margarita Stakes at Santa Anita:

Rosie is a special rider. It's a gift from God, what she’s got. She doesn’t realize it yet, but she’s been anointed with this talent. She is one of the brightest young stars in this game.

  • Mike Repole, owner of 8-year-old former claimer Caixa Eletronica who was victorious in the Uncle Mo Stakes at Aqueduct last week:

Owning a horse like Uncle Mo was special and having a race named for him was great. To win the race with a fan favorite like Caixa Eletronica was also great. Uncle Mo was the best and favorite horse I’ve owned, but Caixa Eletronica has been the funnest horse I’ve owned.

  • Trainer Steve Hobby on the status of his six-year-old mare, Tiz Miz Sue, the day after her repeat victory in the Grade III Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn Park last weekend:

She’s good. She's full of peppermints this morning.

  • Katherine Webb—the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron who became famous after ESPN’s Brent Musberger gushed over her beauty during the telecast of this year’s BCS Championship—telling Alyssa Bereznak of Vanity Fair Daily about the ritual of women dressing nicely for Alabama football games:

It’s like the Kentucky Derby of Southern football.
