From The Grandstand

Voices From The Grandstand

  • Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association Chairman Alan Foreman, quoted by Joe Drape in The New York Times, on eight Mid Atlantic and Northeast states committing to a uniform medication and drug testing program:

This is an initiative that no horsemen’s group — or anyone else — can find a reason not to get behind. It will do good things for the safety and welfare of the horse and the riders.

  • Jockey Kevin Krigger, rider of fourth-place finisher Goldencents, on Julien Leparoux’s riding strategy aboard favored runner up Flashback in last Saturday’s San Felipe Stakes:

I was surprised, as good a rider as Julien is supposed to be, the move he made around the turn to make us have a dogfight race all the way around, turning into the backstretch. That’s like committing suicide, you know?

  • Jockey Ramon Dominguez on how doctors are judging his recovery from a fractured skull suffered during a spill on January 18:

Unless they’re lying to me, everyone is happy not only with my condition but with the progress I’ve made in a short period of time.

  • Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. on his condition after being unseated leaving the gate aboard Fort Larned in last Saturday’s Gulfstream Park Handicap:

I didn't get hurt at all. The only thing that was bruised was my pride. Now my only concern is for the horse. I hope he comes out of the race without any problems.

  • Miami Heat forward Rashard Lewis, quoted on CBS4-TV in Miami, after his horse White Rose won on March 8 at Gulfstream Park:

It was a great day. It’s very tough to win in horse racing. White Rose being in first place, me being able to attend and me being able to be in the winner’s circle, it’s a very good day.
