From The Grandstand

Voices From The Grandstand

  • Owner Mike Repole and what it would mean to win the Belmont Stakes in his own backyard as quoted in Thoroughbred Daily News:

Growing up a kid from Queens, I’ve been watching this race since Woody Stephens won five in a row when I was a 13-year-old. I love New York, I love racing at Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga and I’m never going to make it a secret how bad I want to win this race.

  • Penny Chenery, 91-year-old owner of Secretariat, reminiscing about the 40thanniversary of Secretariat’s epic 31-length victory in the 1973 Belmont Stakes:

I called him Secretariat, because “Big Red” was not my doing. Because he was an important horse … he wasn’t a nickname kind of horse; he was Secretariat.

  • Jockey Gary Stevens on how he felt after denying Real Quiet the Triple Crown in 1998 aboard Victory Gallop:

Like Wayne Lukas said, he is paid to spoil dreams and I'm the guy he hires to do it.

  • Trainer D. Wayne Lukas when asked if winning the Preakness with Gary Stevens in the irons on Oxbow made the win that more special:

Oh yeah, the old guys got it done.
