DAILY RACING FORM / NTRA PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
Name: Jim Goodman
Resides: Frankfort, KY
Occupation: Director of Mutuels and Simulcasting, Keeneland Association
Favorite Track: Keeneland.....tough choice!
Favorite Wager: Pick Four
Qualifying Site: Horsetourneys.com
How did you first get into horse racing? In my early twenties, I had a friend who convinced me to go to Churchill Downs. At that time I lived in southwestern Kentucky and had not been exposed to live racing. In the fall of that year, we traveled to Keeneland and I was hooked for life.
How many times (and in which years) have you previously qualified for the DRF/NTRA NHC? This is my first time to qualify for the NHC.
What is your best finish in a handicapping tournament, and what is your largest tournament payout? Second place in a qualifying tournament; no prize money other than the $500 travel allowance.
What wager created the largest payout for you? Please elaborate on the circumstances (date, track, etc.). I hit a $7,200 Pick Four during the Keeneland Spring Meet in 2012.
What is your most memorable horse racing experience? Seeing Alysheba win the 1988 Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs.
Do you have any interesting hobbies, experiences or past accomplishments that others might find unique or interesting? I retired as Deputy Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Parks at the age of 49, prior to beginning my second career at Keeneland. I am also the Contest Coordinator for the DRF/NTRA qualifying tournaments at Keeneland, where I have met many of my fellow tournament players.
Does anyone else in your family share your enthusiasm as a horseplayer? My 19-year-old son; he seems to have been born with a Racing Form in his hands. His first trip to Keeneland was the Thunder Gulch Blue Grass in 1995, when he was 11 months old.
What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of? My family; I have a beautiful, accomplished wife, Becky, and two great children, Tracy and David.
What would you do with the NHC grand prize if you won? I know that my wife would be retiring; I would not since I have one of the greatest jobs in the world, but the money would certainly make paying for college much easier. Might be a new car in there for me...but I am just honored to have made the field with all the great contest players I have met.
Meet Jim in person at the July 27 Keeneland Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Challenge. Click here for more information.
