NHC News

Name:  Kevin Cox

Oceanside, NY

Retired N.Y.P.D. Officer/Jockey Agent

Favorite Track:
Saratoga and Hialeah

Favorite Wager:
Anything involving more than one horse!

Qualifying Track: and Belmont Park (two NHC entries and a $3,000 bonus for two first-place finishes)

How did you first get into horse racing?  From reading tattered, yellowed, ancient copies of "The Form" (aka "The Bible") that my father had accumulated through the years.

How many times (and in which years) have you previously qualified for the DRF/NTRA NHC?
Two times, 2012 and 2013.

What is your best finish in a handicapping tournament, and what is your largest tournament payout?
I finished in first place this past weekend at Belmont Park.  I won $40,000!

What wager created the largest payout for you?  Please elaborate on the circumstances (date, track, etc.).
It was during a Saratoga meet several years back.  They didn't even have the full simulcasting card that they do today, however, you could bet on the races from Del Mar after the live Saratoga races were completed.  I bet $400 to win on a horse that I waited all day for, that had been eased in his last start!  I believe Tyler Baze was aboard.  I'm watching the race by myself by the Big Red Spring (close to a quick exit after a loss!).  I was describing the race call to my father via telephone.  The horse goes wire to wire at 18-1 and I got back $7,600.  My father yelled, "You get that money and get the hell out of there!"

What is your most memorable horse racing experience?
My first win as a jockey agent in Saratoga for sure!  I'm currently in between riders but to live out a dream, to become an agent, and win in the place that meant so much to my father and I (and the day before his birthday) was very emotional.  Horse:  Quiet All American Jockey:  Simon Husbands Owner:  West Point Stables Trainer:  Guadalupe Preciado.  There was a nice article written by Sean Clancy in the Saratoga Special about it.  I highly recommend it.

Do you have any interesting hobbies, experiences or past accomplishments that others might find interesting or unique?
After Septemeber 11 I decided to follow my dream a little bit.  I was still a police officer, but knew I wanted to do something at the racetrack.  So I went to Gary Contessa and he gave me a job walking hots.  Then Joe Aquilino hired me as a massage therapist and soon after that I was a barn foreman for Jimmy Ferraro.  All these jobs were done AFTER working a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift as a police officer!  I am also an avid "Racetrack Collector".   I travel all over the world and visit racetracks, talk my way into the winner's circle and hang in the photo.  I currently have over 40 photos (including harness).

Does anyone else in your family share your enthusiasm as a horseplayer?
My wife, Nicole, is an active contest participant and missed qualifying in 2012 by 10 cents in November.  She will get there!

What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of?
I would have to say putting in 20 years with the N.Y.P.D. and retiring unscathed.  Qualifying to the NHC was something my father and I had tried for quite some time.  It was very emotional when it happened.

What would you do with the NHC grand prize if you won?
I would say that a vacation would be in order.  It would be a coin flip.  My wife and I can't decide if we would rather go to beautiful Waikiki Beach for two weeks or go see Plymouth Rock.  I think common sense would prevail and our luggage would need bathing suits.

Which person in Thoroughbred racing would you most like to have dinner with?
Andy Beyer.  He is a genius and my methodology of handicapping is primarily based in his numbers.  If he didn't come up with this idea I WOULD HAVE!
