From The Grandstand

Voices From The Grandstand

  • Owner Matt Bryan after his horse, Ive Struck a Nerve, won last Saturday’s Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds:

I called my wife and told her to get fitted for a Derby hat.

  • Trainer Shug McGaughey, quoted by Mike Welsch in Daily Racing Form, on whether he had gotten ‘Derby fever’ following Orb’s win in the Fountain of Youth Stakes:

I don’t get Derby fever, but don’t think I’m not excited, because I am.

  • Actress Anjelica Huston, quoted in The Saturday Evening Post, on one of the things that horses have taught her:

I've worked with horses all my life and there's something that every person who's ever worked with a horse knows. You can go into a field and try to catch a horse and chase your horse all over the place and you’ll never get your hands on it. But if you go into a field and sit down on the grass, whoa! Probably within five minutes that horse will come to you. I think that’s how it is with people too.

  • Horse show professional George H. Morris on the global Thoroughbred talent pool:

The American Thoroughbred is the best sport horse in the world.
