Voices From The Grandstand

  • Rachael Ray, in 'Every Day with Rachael Ray', on one her favorite summer outings:

My dad lives in Saratoga, N.Y., and we love to go to the Saratoga Race Course, the oldest thoroughbred track in the country. My friend Bobby Flay even runs horses there! It’d be so cool to go for its 150th anniversary this summer.

  • WinStar Farm President Elliot Walden on naming Calvin Borel—winning rider for WinStar aboard Super Saver in the 2010 Kentucky Derby—to ride Revolutionary in this year’s Run for the Roses:

Calvin's Kentucky Derby experience and affinity for Churchill Downs makes him a perfect fit for most Derby contenders, and we're thrilled to have him aboard Revolutionary to once again carry the WinStar colors in horse racing's biggest race. Obviously, Calvin did a masterful job guiding Super Saver to WinStar's first-ever Kentucky Derby victory a few years ago, which is something we'll be forever thankful for. So we've had good fortune together, and hopefully, history can repeat itself on May 4th.

  • Trainer Charlie LoPresti, after his 2012 Horse of the Year Wise Dan won the Maker’s 46 Mile Stakes at Keeneland last Friday, recalling a prerace question about his biggest fear heading into the race, which was Wise Dan’s first since last November’s Breeders’ Cup Mile:

I said, ‘I fear the layoff the most.’ I didn’t crank him as tight as he needed to be for this race.
