From The Grandstand

Voices From The Grandstand

  • Trainer Richard Mandella, asked about having enough points to comfortably qualify for the Kentucky Oaks following 2012 Champion 2-year-old filly Beholder’s Santa Anita Oaks win last Saturday:

It’s pretty nice to have her, points or no points. Don’t confuse me with math.

  • Trainer Doug O'Neill, shortly after the Santa Anita Derby, on when he plans to ship Goldencents to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby:

I don’t know. We’ve got to huddle up. As soon as the alcohol wears off, we’ll figure it all out.

  • Jockey Kevin Krigger on winning the Santa Anita Derby aboard Goldencents and on looking ahead to the Kentucky Derby:

Right here, right now, is the biggest moment of my life. ... It’s going to mean everything to me, to be able to go to the Derby, to be able to make a run for the roses. Every jock dreams about this.

  • James Covello, co-owner of Falling Sky, on the thrill of having a Kentucky Derby contender:

I’ve had graded stakes horses before, but I’ve never had one with a chance to run in the Derby. This is something that all of the horse’s connections are excited about, and we’re going to soak up every minute of it.
