Out of the Gate with ... D.B. Sweeney

D.B. Sweeney is an accomplished film and television actor whose memorable roles include playing Shoeless Joe Jackson in “Eight Men Out,” Doug Dorsey in “The Cutting Edge,” Travis Walton in “Fire in the Sky,” and Dish Boggett in the landmark “Lonesome Dove” miniseries. For many years, Sweeney has devoted himself to supporting U.S. military troops and their families. He has been overseas to war zones several times and made many appearances at posts, bases and ships stateside. In cooperation with the Army, he developed and runs a website called “Letters From Hollywood” that encourages other celebrities to send messages of support and gratitude to our peerless military.

How and when I was introduced to Thoroughbred racing: My Uncle, jockey Warren Mehrtens, won the Triple Crown in 1946. We used to visit him in the summer at Saratoga Springs, where he was a steward.

My favorite racetrack: Del Mar

My favorite Thoroughbred racing event: Kentucky Derby

Other sports/teams I follow: Hockey: New York Rangers; Baseball: Boston Red Sox

What I would like to see more of in Thoroughbred racing: Young people at the track

What I would like to see less of in Thoroughbred racing: Oil money pricing actors out of every decent colt for sale

Three words that define what Thoroughbred racing means to me: Fast, exciting, glamorous

First Thoroughbred track I ever attended was: Belmont Park

Favorite all-time Thoroughbred: Assault

My personal best moment in the sport of Thoroughbred racing: First time I went to Del Mar, I hit a nice trifecta in the first race I saw.
