Established in 1919, this race is open to 3-year-olds and older and it is contested at a distance of 1 1/4 miles (10 furlongs). Hall of Famers, Kelso (horse) and Eddie Arcaro (jockey) won this race an amazing five and ten times, respectively. Jim Fitzsimmons won the race seven times as a trainer while owners Glen Riddle Farm and Bohemia Stable each have tallied five wins.
As the centerpiece of the Belmont fall meet, the race is often the first major race of the year in which the top 3-year-olds of the East Coast square off against older horses. It was run at 1 1/2 miles through 1990 and was first known as the Jockey Club Stakes.
