Breeders' Cup ClassicArcadia, CA Santa Anita Park
The Breeders’ Cup Classic is considered by many to be the premier North American Thoroughbred race of the year. It is contested at the classic distance of 1 1/4 miles (10 furlongs) on the main track and it draws many of the top racehorses from North America and Europe.
The Breeders' Cup Classic is part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships inaugurated in 1984 at Hollywood Park. It has since been run at 10 different tracks. The $5,000,000 purse is the greatest of any North American Thoroughbred race, and the race often has Horse of the Year implications.
The only horse to have won the race twice is Tiznow, who captured the 2000 and 2001 editions. Two jockeys, Chris McCarron and Jerry Bailey, each have five wins in the race and trainers Jay Robbins and Charlie Whittingham each have a pair of victories to their credit. Stronach Stables is the only owner with two wins. In 2009 Zenyatta became the only female horse to win the race. Other famous horses to have won the race include Ferdinand, Alysheba, Sunday Silence, A.P. Indy, Cigar, Skip Away and Curlin.
