America's greatest steeplechase trainer is very skilled horseman with flat runners and has developed Eclipse Awards winners on the dirt and turf. He has won a total of 13 Eclipse Awards with nine horses. In 1990, he was elected to racing's Hall of Fame. Sheppard added to his record with his 26th steeplechase earnings title in 2011. He recorded his 1,000th steeplechase win in 2010 and his career steeplechase earnings topped $20 million in 2011. Sheppard is the son of a veteran British racing official and attended Eton College before coming to America in 1961. He met the legendary steeplechase trainer Burley Cocks and spent nine months working on Cocks' farm. Following a brief return to England, Sheppard spent the next two years riding for Cocks then started training a string of horses. One of his first clients was George Strawbridge, owner of Augustin Stables. They have been together for 46 years. Sheppard saddled his first winner in 1966.
