Family is central to trainer William “Buff” Bradley’s success. He grew up riding and working with Thoroughbreds on the Frankfort, Kentucky, farm owned by father, Fred, a former State Senator. The tradition continues with the younger Bradley’s three children handling chores while his wife, Kim, also from a racing family, oversees daily activities.
After graduating from Kentucky State University with a business management degree in 1989, Bradley became an assistant trainer primarily in the Southwest. He obtained his trainer’s license in 1993 and has developed a reputation for success with horses with moderate pedigrees, notably $2-million earner Brass Hat, who was raised on and later retired to the family farm. Another notable retiree is King of Speed, who raced 111 times and now is ridden by both octogenarian Fred and his grandchildren. The Bradleys’ latest star is Groupie Doll, winner of a Grade 1 race at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day. Bradley’s racing stable is based at Churchill Downs with winter stays in Florida. His website (www.buffracing.com) is replete with information and photos of family, employees, horses, and pets.
