Tom Albertrani trained 2006 champion 3-year-old male and Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Bernardini.
He began his career at age 13 as a hotwalker for his uncle, trainer Jack Abatemaco, at Belmont Park. Albertrani rode as an apprentice, then worked horses for Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott at age 22. Albertrani became Mott's assistant in 1986; his future wife, Fonda, was the regular exercise rider for two-time Horse of the Year Cigar.
Albertrani was hired in 1995 as an assistant to trainer Saeed bin Suroor for Godolphin Racing in the United Arab Emirates. He returned to the United States in 2003 as trainer for Darley, and saddled his first winner, Ashraaf, on June 18 of that year at Belmont Park. His brother, Louis, trained 1999 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Artax.
For 2013, Albertrani boasted Freedom Child among his trainees, a son of Malibu Moon who proved best in the Peter Pan Stakes (G2) before trying his hand in the 1 1/2 mile Belmont Stakes. The trainer also had the hard-trying Twilight Eclipse in the barn, one of the most consistent geldings in the country on the turf.
While Albertrani hasn't won a Breeders' Cup race, he has been second or third six times. His horse Better Lucky was a close second to Judy the Beauty in the 2014 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint while Twilight Eclipse was third in the Breeders' Cup Turf that year.
