Formed in 1994, Godolphin is the international division composed of the top horses owned by members of Dubai's royal family. Godolphin has won more than 180 Grade 1 or Group 1 races in 12 countries. Dubai-born Saeed bin Suroor has been the head trainer since 1995 and Mahmood al Zarooni was hired in 2010. Andre Fabre trains for Godolphin in France. For seven years, Rick Mettee was bin Suroor's assistant in charge of the U.S.-based runners. In November 2011, Godolphin announced that it was closing its U.S. division and that its runners would remain in the care of trainers who have horses for Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud, Kiaran McLaughlin, Eoin Harty and Tom Albertrani. Led by Seventh Street, Music Note, Flashing, Gayego and Pyro, a group that won a total of nine Grade 1 races, Godolphin earned its first Eclipse Award as the outstanding owner in North America in 2009.
