Alex Solis won the Bill SHoemaker Award as outstaning jockey at the 2003 Breeders' Cup World Championships after winning the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) with Johar (in a dead heat) and the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) with Pleasantly Perfect.

Solis, who is rapidly approaching 5,000 career wins, won the 1986 Preakness Stakes (G1) aboard Snow Chief and at one point won six conectutive major riding titles at Southern California meets.

Solis enjoy playing golf and hiking, the latter he says helps keep him in shape.

Solis became interested in riding when introduced to the sport by his father. He enrolled in jockey school in Panama at age 14. He moved from Panama to the U.S. in 1982.
