Breeder: William F. Lynn (Ky.)
Sire: Hard Spun
Dam: Moyne Abbey, by Charismatic
Wicked Strong debuted in second place before breaking his maiden at Belmont Park. He followed that effort with a third-place finish in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes behind Honor Code.
He began his 3-year-old season with a sub-par performance in the Holy Bull Stakes then began to regain his form in an allowance race. He came through with a huge performance in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial on April 5, closing powerfully to defeat highly regarded Social Inclusion and multiple graded stakes winner Samraat, both of whom were previously unbeaten.
Wicked Strong's 3 1/2-length Wood Memorial Stakes victory cemented his spot in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby where he would finish fourth. Wicked Strong dead-heated for fourth with Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome in the Belmont before winning the Jim Dandy at Saratoga in July. The colt then lost the Travers by a nose to stablemate V.E. Day.
The bay colt is a son of Hard Spun and the third foal of the Charismatic mare Moyne Abbey.
The name Wicked Strong is a tribute to those impacted by the Boston Marathon bombings. Owner Centennial Farms raced 1993 Belmont Stakes winner Colonial Affair. Centennial President Donald Little Jr. originally attempted to name the colt Boston Strong but the name was already taken.
