Bred in New York by James Patrick Delaney, Went the Day Well sold for $15,000 as a weanling at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale in 2009.
The bay colt is out of Tiz Male's Day, by Tiznow. Barry Irwin, Team Valor International's chief exectutive officer, purchased Went the Day Well privately after seeing him in England.
Went the Day Well began his career in Great Britain, placing second twice on turf, before returning to the U.S. for his 2012 campaign. Fourth in his U.S. debut at 1 1/8 miles, he finally broke his maiden going 1 1/16 miles on the dirt at Gulfstream Park.
Went the Day Well emulated the effort of his stablemate Animal Kingdom by winning the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park.
He could not match 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom's feat in the opening leg of the Triple Crown, settling for a fast-closing fourth-place finish.
