Tonalist opened some eyes with a dominant maiden win in January of his 3-year-old season but his breakthrough performance was a 4-length romp in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes in May 2014. He then won the 2014 Belmont Stakes, ending California Chrome's Triple Crown bid.
Tonalist finished second in the Jim Dandy and third in the Travers at Saratoga before a victory against older males in the 2014 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park. He closed his 3-year-old season with a fifth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Tonalist opened his 4-year-old campaign with a win in the Grade 3 Westchester Stakes at Belmont before a runner-up finish in the Met Mile. He then finished second in the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap and third in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes before a repeat victory in the Jockey Club Gold Cup pushed him past the $3-million plateau in career earnings.
The bay colt by top sire Tapit is out of Settling Mist, a winner at 1 1/8 miles who is by 1981 Kentucky Derby winner Pleasant Colony. Settling Mist is a half-sister (same dam [mother], different sire [father]) to The Bink, the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Riskaverse.
Tonalist's third dam (maternal great-grandmother) in 1991 Broodmare of the Year Toll Booth, by Buckpasser, and this family is responsible for 1992 Horse of the Year, Belmont Stakes winner and breed-shaping sire A.P. Indy as well as more recently 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace.
