Bred: Twin Creeks Farm, Larry Byer and Rancho San Miguel (KY)

Sire: Bernardini

Dam: Pilfer, by Deputy Minister

Establishing himself solidly as a top miler with his victory in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile at the end of 2011, To Honor and Serve has been prepping for the 2012 Breeders’ Cup, in which he is a contender for the Classic (G1) and Dirt Mile (G1). His third-place finish to Shackleford and Caleb’s Posse in the Metropolitan Handicap (G1) puts him squarely in the mix for the championship run in November. Caleb’s Posse, now retired, and Shackleford finished 1-2 in the 2011 Dirt Mile.

To Honor and Serve served notice that he was back at the top of his game with a determined victory over Mucho Macho Man in the Woodward Stakes (G1), a victory that should serve as a nice springboard to the Breeders' Cup.

Always a promising competitor for owner Live Oak Plantation and Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, To Honor and Serve, a bay son of Bernardini out of the Deputy Minister mare Pilfer, has reached the seven-figure plateau in career earnings.

The 4-year-old colt was bred in Kentucky by the partnership of Twin Creeks Farm, Larry Byer and Rancho San Miguel and was bought by Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation for $575,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale in 2009. To Honor and Serve justified that enthusiasm by posting a pair of graded stakes victories as a 2-year-old and finishing as a finalist for the Eclipse Award for champion 2-year-old male that went to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Uncle Mo.

He came back as a 3-year-old and traveled the Triple Crown trail early in the year before going to the sidelines with a suspensory injury. He returned to racing later in the year and finished seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Classic prior to his win in the Cigar Mile.
