Bred: Martin and Pam Wygod (Ky.)
Sire: Candy Ride (ARG)
Dam: Common Hope, by Storm Cat
Owned by a partnership that includes Jim Rome's Jungle Racing, Shared Belief made his presence known at the stakes level when he won the final Hollywood Prevue.
The gelding won his maiden at Golden Gate Fields by seven lengths for owner-breeders Martin and Pam Wygod, who then sold him to Rome's partnership. Three weeks later, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer entered him in the Prevue, which he won impressively over the highly regarded Kobe's Back.
Shared Belief subsequently romped in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity to seal his fate as champion 2-year-old male.
Shared Belief missed the 2014 Triple Crown series because of injury, but his return in the spring and summer was nothing short of spectacular. He won an allowance race in May at Golden Gate Fields before a dominant performance in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Derby in July.
He then made his first start against older horses and tackled 1 1/4 miles for the first time in the Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar in August and responded with a runaway win that cemented his credentials as one of the very best horses in training in the U.S.
The gelding secured likely favoritism in the Breeders' Cup Classic and kept his undefeated record intact when galloping to a neck victory in the Sept. 27 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita Park after a wide trip. He then finished a troubled fourth after being bumped hard at the start by eventual winner Bayern, but Shared Belief came back to win his final start of the season in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26.
Shared Belief made his 2015 debut in the San Antonio Stakes in a rematch with 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome. Shared Belief got the better of Chrome in the San Antonio, overhauling him in the strech and pulled away to win by 1 1/2 lengths.
The gelding then won the Santa Anita Handicap impressively before heading east to run in the Charles Town Classic. Shared Belief sustained a pelvic injury in that race and was sent to a farm to recuperate. He returned to training in November 2015.
Shared Belief is by Pacific Classic winner Candy Ride and out of the Storm Cat mare Common Hope. He is a half-brother to six other winners, including the Grade 3 winner Little Miss Holly and stakes-placed Double Major, who is the dam of stakes placed Major Hope. Also sharing his family tree is Grade 1 winner Key Phrase, who is the dam of noted sire Yankee Gentleman and Zing, who is the dam of Grade 2 winner Half Ours.
