Bred: Fitzhugh LLC (Md.)
Sire: Lemon Drop Kid
Dam: Tough Broad, by Broad Brush
The globetrotting Richard’s Kid was a rather modest runner toiling in his home state of Maryland until being purchased privately by Arnold Zetcher in spring 2009 and being turned over to trainer Bob Baffert. In the hands of the Hall of Fame conditioner, the son of Lemon Drop Kid turned into a major stakes winner, taking back-to-back runnings of the Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) in 2009 and 2010.
Zetcher sold Richard’s Kid to Zabeel Racing International in January 2010 and he remained in California with Baffert throughout the year. In 2011, he was sent to Dubai to race due to his affinity for synthetic surfaces, but could do no better than a fourth in five starts between March 2011 and March 2012. He returned to California shortly after that start and has since blossomed again, first in Baffert’s care and then after his sale and transfer to Doug O'Neill.
Richard’s Kid is the product of several generations of breeding by Robert Meyerhoff’s Fitzhugh. His dam, Tough Broad, is by Meyerhoff’s multiple stakes winner and top sire Broad Brush.
