Bred: James S. Karp (Ky.)
Dam: Storm Tracer, by Pulpit
A homebred for James Karp, Newsdad has shown no liking for dirt in two tries—at Churchill Downs and Belmont Park. In 2011, he made his synthetic surface debut in the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Race Course, finishing a close fourth, but he has found his calling in long-distance turf races, winning from 1 1/8 to 1 ½ miles.
Trainer Bill Mott discovered that the longer the better for him, and while he missed by only a nose to Simmard in the Mac Diarmida Stakes (G2) at 1 3/8 miles, when he went the full 1 ½ miles in the Pan American Stakes (G2), he won by two lengths. Mott felt that running once a month since last October finally caught up with him when he finished fifth at Keeneland in the 1 ½-mile Elkhorn Stakes (G2), so he gave him several months off. Now that he’s back in competition in New York distance turf events, Newsdad has targeted some of the marquee turf races in the turf male division.
